BABY DEVELOPMENT

Your little ones heart is now big enough that we can hear the heartbeats with a simple stethoscope placed on your stomach.  Did you know that you won’t know the final colour of their eyes until 6-10 months after birth? Many babies appear to have blue eyes at birth and as pigment is distributed within the eye, the colour will change into its ultimate hue.   Their skin looks quite wrinkled and is still translucent, and is pinkish red in colour because of visible little blood vessels. It is covered with a greasy protective coating, the "vernix ", which is secreted by the sebaceous glands.  Don’t worry, it will disappear!

YOUR BODY

Your bump is getting bigger. As the baby and everything surrounding it grows heavier, the more of a strain there will be on your back. It is important to sit and stand as straight as possible. You can practise this by trying to balance a book on your head. Try not to let your pelvis tip forward as you walk or stand. You can put a small cushion behind your back to support your upright posture if you are sitting for a long time.

 

NUTRITION

Meat or fish? It may be surprising that both choices have about the same amount of protein per gram.  Meat, especially lean red meat has an added benefit of being a good source of iron. Be sure you vary and balance what you eat, and enjoy (as long as you know those foods are okay to eat while pregnant). Choose lean meats such as poultry without skin, and lean cuts of red meat such as steak. If you like fish, go for it, even if they are fatty. Those fats are essential for you and your growing baby . As we’ve said before, just make sure to vary the fish, include small fish such as sardines and mackerel, as well as canned salmon or tuna.

 

TIPS

Been feeling some heaviness in the legs? Ankles been swelling? Here are some quick tips for relieving the problem.  Walking allows your calves to activate blood circulation and carry fluid to other parts of your body, aim for a half hour walk each day. And almost the exact opposite advice is elevating your feet, which helps relieve the pressure on your legs and ankles.  Even try sleeping with your legs elevated and on your left side to relieve the pressure of the baby lying on and compressing your larger blood vessels. If, however, you are concerned about swelling, or notice swelling in your face and/or your hands, see your doctor immediately. Ankles been swelling? Here are some quick tips for relieving the problem. Two solutions, each the exact opposite of the other. Either sit back and put your feet up. Or get out and walk! Elevating your feet helps relieve the pressure on your legs and ankles. And walking allows your calves to activate blood circulation and carry fluid to other parts of your body. If, however, you are concerned about swelling, or notice swelling in your face and/or your hands, see your doctor immediately. Some of these symptoms may indicate pre-eclampsia, a kind of high blood pressure common in pregnancy.
